Marriage is a calling…. from God. What?!! Isn’t that reserved for pastors, missionaries and other church staff? Not so, according to Adam Hamilton. “Marriage is not simply the next step after falling in love. Marriage is a calling from God, a lifelong mission of service and caring for another human being – seeking to be, on God’s behalf, a companion and helper to another.” Based on secular research, his own experience as a counselor, surveys, and personal interviews, he provides biblical perspectives on the differences between men and women, rekindling love in difficult times, sexual intimacy, habits of unhealthy marriages, fidelity, and the role of faith in marriage.

Hamilton’s work will appeal primarily to a Christian audience. The information from surveys and interviews was gleaned primarily from within church congregations and may or may not reflect the attitudes of society in general. However, he also uses research from contemporary authors such as John Gottman, John Gray, Gary Chapman, John Gagnon, Edward Laumann, and Gina Kolata. At the end of each chapter, exercises for individuals and couples are provided. A study guide is also available for small groups. This book is an excellent resource for people who are single.

This book is an excellent resource for people who are single or married. Single people will gain a better understanding of the practical aspects of a lasting marriage. Married couples will be challenged and equipped to reach their full potential in marriage. “Making Love Last a Lifetime” is worth the investment.
